Archimedes' crow. Archimedes (c287-212 BC) Ancient Greek mathematician and inventor is said to have invented the device for use during the defence of Syracuse against the Romans (212 BC) to overturn attacking ships. Here it has been adapted to pluck individuals from forces attacking a city under a siege. 18th century engraving.
